Nikolay Davydenko announces his retirement

Russian tennis player Nikolay Davydenko is the winner of the 2009 ATP World Tour Finals, also having won three ATP Masters Series. Since his wrist injury in 2010, the Russian has had a decline in his form since 2011, not being able to keep up with major stars such as Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic. Davydenko began 2011 with losing to the Swiss superstar at the Qatar Open in the final after surpassing Rafael Nadal and continued his bad form at the US Open against the Serbian Djokovic.

2012 wasn’t a good year for the Russian either, as he started out by losing in the first round of the Australian Open and the first round of the Roland Garros, continuing with another loss at the Wimbledon Championships. In 2012, Davydenko entered 25 tournaments and had a 24-23 record, winning a grand total of $498,941. The year of 2012 left him with an ATP singles ranking of 44, down from 41 at the start of 2012 and it seemed like he would never get back into the Top 20. The past two years have been worse for the Russian and his retirement was slowly coming. In 2006 Davydenko helped his country win the Davis Cup and also won five titles, as well as reached the semi-finals of  the U.S. Open.

In this last season, Davydenko lost to Daniel Brands in the first round of the Qatar Open and to Richard Gasquet in the second round of the Australian Open. In 2014 Open 13 second round, he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and his bad shape continued at the 2014 Indian Wells Masters, where he reached the second round and lost to John Isner. In the first round of the 2014 Sony Open Tennis, he was beat by Adrian Mannarino.

Having occupied the third place in the world rankings in 2006, the Russian announced in a press conference in Moscow that the time has come for his retirement: “I had a lot of injuries over the last few years, they are still causing me discomfort. The time has come: I am officially announcing my retirement as a professional sportsman.” said Davydenko in the press conference, ending a 15-year long career at the age of 33.
