Weekend Box Office – Chappie Tops Charts

The weekend box office of 6-8 March 2015 was the least exciting of the year, with pictures gathering modest sums and with not so tight competitions. We had our share of Friday – 6 March – releases, but although in top positions, the gathered figures are not impressive. Thus, in the leading position we meet Chappie, Sci-Fi robot action directed by Neill Blomkamp, picture which reached a total of $13,300,000 gross. In the following positions we get last week lead Focus, followed by another 6 March released picture, but this time a comedy drama: The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Although a box office lead, Chappie did not impress as much as some expected and that is proven by the incontestable figures. On its release day, Chappie gathered $4,550,000, with a minor increase on Saturday and a total of $5,270,000, with a Sunday decrease: $3,480,000 gross. According to box office mojo, the modest success of Chappie has as prime cause its linkage by many with Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 picture, District 9; here are the figures for District 9 and Elysium, both directed by Blomkamp and released in previous years: $37.4 million and $29.8 million (obviously more than the sum of this weekend’s box office leading title).

Position number two of the weekend box office was last weekend’s lead, action movie Focus, starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. The picture gathered a total of $10,020,000 (almost half the sum received last weekend).

Focus was followed in charts by another fresh release, entitled The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The John Madden directed comedy drama gathered $8,600,000 gross and starred Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy.

Forth position was taken by Kingsman: The Secret Service, which resisted in the top positions of the weekend box office since 13 February. This week finale brought the picture $8,300,000 and another week in charts.

Probably the most impressive and resistive in the weekend box office is number 5, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. The animation managed to survive at the top of charts for a full month (released 6 February). In the weekend box office of 6-8 March 2015, SpongeBob gathered a total of $7,000,000.
