Fast charging breakthrough – charge your phone in 30 seconds

Fast charging is one of the things many companies aim for when designing electronics, but we are still far from charging our phones in under two hours, with a few exceptions which cost more than you would be willing to pay. Fast charging might become convenient and available soon, as an Israeli company called StoreDot is developing a new technology that would let you fully charge your phone in half a minute.

Fast charging could be made possible in the near future according to StoreDot, who are using nano-technology to synthesize artificial molecules to develop a battery that can store a higher amount of charge in a lesser amount of time. A fast charging battery prototype has already been revealed, but it is still quite big and bulky which would make it an inconvenience. StoreDot says that they would be able to make a thin and practical fast charging battery for phones by the time we enter 2016, which is pretty soon. The company also say that the battery can be used to charge electric cars. Fast charging electric cars is also made a possibility, the company stating that the average car could be charged in around 5 or 10 minutes.

StoreDot is working on developing nanodots to use in its fast charging batteries and is receiving considerable support through crowd funding and from big names like Roman Abramovich. The research and development is also being funded by an unnamed Asian phone company, we wonder if it’s one of the big ones. Doron Myersdorf is the founder and CEO of StoreDot and he is confident that the fast charging capabilities of their battery would revolutionize the way we design and use smartphones and electric cars. The fast charging batteries, if all goes according to plan, would be able to handle 1500 recharge and discharge cycles, meaning the battery would be good for about 3 years of use.

There’s a lot of money, over $48 million, funding StoreDot and its fast charging battery, so we hope that the 2016 estimation of the company is accurate. With good funding and support, we might actually see these ultra fast charging batteries used in our smartphones and electric cars of the future. The focus on power supply and fast charging is increasing and with the growing number of smartphone and electric car users, StoreDot might be onto a good, profitable product here, even though we don’t know how safe or ecological the fast charging battery will end up being.
