ISIS enslavement of women

ISIS has released a new publication in which it justifies the kidnapping and enslavement of women. They interpret the Islamic theology in a manner in which women are nothing more than sex slaves. Most of the Muslim world, however does not agree with the Islamic state and considers it a perversion of Islam. The group states the following in an online publication entitled “The revival of slavery before the Hour”: “One should remember that enslaving the families of the kuffar — the infidels — and taking their women as concubines is a firmly established aspect of the Shariah, or Islamic law”.

The fourth edition of the digital magazine, entitled “Dabiq” states that women from the Yazidi sect, a Kurdish minority which lives mostly in Iraq, can be captured and forced to become sexual slaves. The publication of the English written “Dabiq” digital magazine coincides with the release of a Human Rights Watch report on the crimes of ISIS against the Yazidis sect. The Human Right’s Watch report is based on interviews with 76 people. A spokesperson for the Human Rights Watch stated: “The Islamic State’s litany of horrific crimes against the Yazidis in Iraq only keeps growing. We heard shocking stories of forced religious conversions, forced marriage, and even sexual assault and slavery — and some of the victims were children.” The report mentions a 17 year old girl, kidnapped and forced to endure sexual abuse and beatings from a large bearded man, before being able to escape a few days later.

In August, tens of thousands of Yazidis members were forced to leave their homes because of ISIS. Families reported the kidnapping or disappearance of hundreds of Yazidi women and young girls. Many of them were later on sold or given to members of ISIS as gifts. The ISIS publication, which contains 56 pages,  also mentions  a massacre of Kurdish PKK soldiers. They present shocking images of tortured and murdered men. They also present pictures with a foster home for children and the elderly, as well as a cancer treatment center. They consider these to be “services for the Muslims”. Another disturbing article in their publication is a copy of American journalist Steven Sotloff’s letter addressed to his mother. They go on by stating that the journalist’s Jewish ancestry guaranteed his execution by ISIS.
