Project Morpheus: Virtual Reality in the Makings

Project Morpheus at this point is what it is, a project, a prototype. According to Sony, the finite virtual reality headset will look totally different in appearance and specs from the current form. Comparing it to project Oculus, some sources claim it to be more refined, even if it finds itself in a incipient stage. Morpheus encompasses a dynamic plastic headstrap and the looks on it look like that of a polished product. Being a prototype not everything is perfect. For example there are still some weight balancing issues that need addressing. Also the wires that are located close to the mouth are inconveniently placed.

The display on Morpheus runs with a 1080p resolution. When asked about the possibility of the Morpheus receiving a 4k resolution boost, Sony just simply shut it down. The 90 degree field of vision on the Morpheus is belittled by Occulus’ 110 degree, but the difference is nothing worth noting. As a plus, that might change with the final version of the VR headset.

Playing a space simulator like Eve: Valkyrie can be for some their long lost childhood dream. The game takes you through asteroid fields, dodging huge chunks of rock, attempting to swing under them and so on. The usage of VR is not without risks. Some users may feel the effects of nausea creeping up on them, but considering Morpheus’ sharpness and reduced latency in the current state, the risks are minimal.

Morpheus’ Castle, one of the other demos for project Morpheus, shows some promising features. Pressing the backtriggers will make your character crunch his fingers into fist mode. Completing your first task, which is beating up a dummy, will award the player with their first weapon, a sword. It eventually ends with the player slicing up the poor dummies’ lower and upper limbs. Who would have dreamed 10 years ago of looking through the very world of one’s dreams? From sports, to fighting games, adventure, treasure hunting, exploration of the deep space and whatnot, just imagine the endless possibilities with tech. Who knows… maybe we will end up on Tatoine, master and padawan swinging light sabers at each other. Untill then we can still dream, but keep our feet firmly on the ground.
