Warcraft 3 can be remade in the Starcraft 2 engine thanks to Blizzard

Warcraft 3 plagued many of our childhoods and who’s to say that it isn’t impacting us in some way now? You could still be playing DotA weekly for all I know. Well it seems that a sliver of light shines on the RTS classic and it comes from the developer that made Warcraft. Blizzard has just released the official assets that were used in the making of Warcraft 3 to the masses but more specifically to Starcraft 2 modders. What could be next?

The modders who will make use of the recently released assets can share their creations on Arcade servers. Basically portals where modders can show off how they’ve created new features or game modes. Better yet, a possibility has surfaced, one that may be imminent. Those who are more crafty and more dedicated can even remake Warcraft 3 in the Starcraft 2 engine. While a lot of effort is required to adapt an entire game to modern times, all the tools are now available, from character models to ambient sounds. Blizzard even kind of encourages us to do so: “What are some of your favorite moments in Warcraft’s history? Whether it’s from the first opening of the dark portal in Warcraft: Orcs and Humans to Grommash leading the Iron Horde in Warlords of Draenor, we want to see it recreated in the Starcraft 2 editor.”

While Warcraft 3 is ripe for an improved edition, we still don’t know if Blizzard itself has any plans for an official remastered edition of the RTS. Or maybe Warcraft 4? Warcraft 3 was a masterpiece back in the day, not just for its story but for its crisp gameplay and various settings. It was followed by an expansion called The Frozen Throne and later on gave way to World of Warcraft, the most popular MMORPG ever. So, what’s next for modders? Show your love and support for Warcraft 3 and we’ll get more good news from Blizzard.
